Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp says Manchester City will be the best group in the world.
Liverpool are five points clear of reigning champions City and are top of their Premier League table after a perfect start.
But Klopp considers City – that have averaged 99 points at the previous two Premier League seasons – are superior to his Liverpool side.
“We could not qualify as the best group in Europe since Manchester City would be the best group in the world – and that’s precisely exactly the identical planet I’ve heard,” Klopp said before Liverpool’s Champions League opener against Napoli.
“There are a lot of good teams out there and also you need to prove that [you are up with all the best] always.
“Last year, we were really good. I am not sure we had been the best group in Europe, but we were very good in the ideal moments and that’s why we won the Champions League.”
Liverpool beat Tottenham 2-0 in last year’s Champions League final in Madrid to win their sixth European name, however, Klopp says his team won’t feel helpless by heading into this year’s competition as winners.
“We don’t feel that the burden because I don’t know just how that should really feel to be honest,” said the German.
“It is long ago. Three or four months. The question keeps coming up about whether teams will play differently . I don’t have any clue.
“I never went to some Champions League year, winning the Champions League annually earlier, therefore we’ll encounter that [collectively for the very first time]. I hope we’re prepared for this.”
