Man Pleads Guilty in Argentine Smuggling Case

Carlos Kauffmann, a wealthy Venezuelan businessman has pleaded guilty in US Federal Court (Miami) to conspiring to act as an illegal foreign agent during the 2007 Argentine presidential election. The charges are that Kauffmann and four others attempted to smuggle $800,000 in cash via suitcase from the Venezuelan government to Cristina Fernandez Kirchner’s campaign. They claim that Kauffman was working as an intermediary between the Venezuelan government and Kirchner. Prosecutors have advised that Kauffmann not be extradited to his native country due to “physical safety concerns”. The Venezuelan government denies any involvement in the case, claiming the the charges were made based on political motives rather than evidence.
