Slum Tourism Gaining Popularity

Slum tourism is a relatively recent phenomenon where organized tours are being offered to poor, remote, and sometimes dangerous locations. According to Danny Palmerlee of Travelburro and Lonely Planet, tour companies are capitalizing on the demand for “off the beaten path” travel experiences. In the past, traveling to places such as a favela, or a remote part of the jungle would require careful planning and getting to know the local people. Now, all it takes is the right tour group and a bit of cash. The term “Slum tourism” was coined by Eric Weiner of the New York Times.

In countries such as Argentina, it’s popular to take tours to remote indigenous villages, mountain towns, and northern border areas such as Jujuy and Iguazu. While these places aren’t particularly dangerous, they are remote, and often unnavigable without the proper guide.
