This week, environmental blog EcoWorldly reported on the near extinction of one of Argentina’s 120 endangered bird species. The Red-Headed Cauquen, as it’s called, is being over-hunted in the Tierra del Fuego region of the country. Many believe this is due to confusion with its sub-specie counterpart, the Grey-Headed Cauquen, which is thought to hurt local crops and is abundant in the area.

The confusion has lead to a rapid extermination of all Cauquen species, and threatens the existence of the Red-Headed bird entirely. There are only two places in the world to find this rare bird, Tierra del Fuego and the Islas Malvinas (Falkland Islands).
