Mar 25, 2008 Click to Comment → PrintYesterday, ceremonies around the country were held to commemorate the 30,000 Argentines who disappeared during the military dictatorship. Monday marked the 32nd anniversary of the coup that put the military in power. Thousands gathered at Plaza de Mayo to demonstrate, while others congregated at the former Navy Mechanics’ School, a notorious torture site.
Though the coup ended in 1983, many of the soldiers and government officials accused of committing injustices have yet to be tried or imprisoned. Argentina’s president Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner has vowed to seek justice from the accused, just 3 years after the amnesty law was lifted.
