Truckers Clash With Farmers, Cities Mobbed With Protesters as Strike Worsens

Argentina is now two weeks into a nationwide farm strike, and people are getting testy. Yesterday, hundreds of protests continued across the nation, sparking fights between picketers and police, farmers and truckers. Commerce in cities such as Cordoba, Junin, Parana, and Gualeguaychuy came to a screeching halt after protesters flooded city centers with tractors, trucks, and barricades. As of yesterday, all beef was stopped from entering the Buenos Aires, and fruits and vegetable shortages are growing.

Argentine president Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner took a bold stance by saying she would not give in to “extortion”. The strike has also had a ripple effect on the economy, driving international soy prices up, and causing the Argentine peso to drop to a five-month low.
