Cristina Speaks: “First lift strike, then we’ll talk”

Argentine president Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner called for an immediate halt to the farm strike, challenging the farmers by saying “we will not talk with a gun pointed at our head”. Though Kirchner’s speech didn’t resonate well with some, it sent a clear message to the farmers, who are now mulling the idea of suspending the strike for 48 hours. The hopes on both sides are to negotiate a mutual agreement, and return the country’s agricultural industry to normal.

The strike, now over two weeks old, has caused a spike in global soy prices, halted beef distribution to the capital, and caused wide-spread civil unrest throughout the nation. The strike initially began after the federal government raised export tariffs on soy and wheat, two of Argentina’s biggest exports.
