The Catholic Bishops of Argentina, Catholic Action, and the Ecuminical Committee of Christian Churches have unilaterally called for an end to the current conflict with the nation’s farmers and the government. The groups, which represent a large contingent of the country’s 97% Christian population, are publicly asking both the government and farmers to come to a quick and peaceful solution. Though they have no political power, the Christian groups believe that they can persuade both sides to re-assess their positions in order to prevent further suffering and violence.
The farm strike, which is going into its third week, has effectively halted meat, soy, and other farm products from moving throughout the country. The strike has also slowed down interstate traffic and slightly devalued the Argentine pesos amidst fears of an impending agricultural crisis.
