Are They Real? Maybe Not in Argentina, as Medical Tourism Soars

7 Comments Print

Though it’s not such a secret anymore, medical tourism is soaring in Argentina, especially cosmetic and dental surgery. This is no phenomenon, however, with a country full of well-trained doctors and a favorable exchange rate. Tourists are flocking to the South American nation by the thousands annually to get cheaper costing procedures at the same quality, or sometimes better than in the US. The cost difference varies depending on the procedure, but some estimate the difference to be greater than 50%. Also, many people like to combine their Argentine procedures with a vacation, making it an ideal gettaway for a week or two.

Recently, tour groups and travel companies have been capitalizing on this trend, setting up package surgery/vacation deals at a flat rate. This is turning into big business, with packages starting in the thousands. And as the demand grows, so does the industry. Argentines have been known to be keen on selective surgery, so there isn’t much of a cultural stigma here. Tummy tucks, breast implants, facelifts, and botox are normal, if not common in places like Puerto Madero, Recoleta, and Palermo Viejo. It’s just part of the modern Buenos Aires culture.

My sister recently went down to Buenos Aires to get porcelain veneers and had a really good experience at a place called Dental Argentina… she had a great time, said it was way cheaper than what she would have paid at home and she was really pleased with the results. I must say I am pretty impressed myself and thinking of going down to do the same thing! Their website is http://www.dental-argentina.com if anyone else is interested.

My views on medical tourism and it’s health risks are rather mixed. I had one friend who received heart surgery in India with no complaints. Another friend had plastic surgery in Thailand and didn’t enjoy it. But, Argentina did proved itself as World leader in Medical Tourism especially in cosmetic and dental surgery.

Medical tourism in Argentina is a fast growing industry.

Argentina’s popularity for cosmetic tourists was solidified in 2002, when the country began to float its currency. As a result, medical treatment in Argentina became much more affordable and attracted many patients from overseas.

Patients can travel to Argentina, receive treatment and then enjoy a fantastic vacation at very affordable rates.

Cosmetic surgery is a specialty here, but other surgery is also available.
