Today, April 2, marks the 26th anniversary of the two-month undeclared war between Argentina and the United Kingdom over land known as both the Islas Malvinas (Argentina) and the Falkland Islands (UK). Since then, the Argentine government has declared April 2 a national holiday to pay tribute to the 655 Argentine soldiers killed in action during the 1982 conflict.
Though war is still a recent memory to some, the islands have been getting more and more tourists over the years, and it’s become a well traveled place for people on vacation in the south of the country. Argentine president Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner has recently made diplomatic pleas to the UK for a return of the islands sovereignty to Argentina. So far, the answer is no.
