Dutch news agency Radio Netherlands Worldwide is running a story today about the plight of undocumented laborers producing clothes under slave-like conditions in Buenos Aires. According to the report, Buenos Aires has an estimated 400 clandestine sweat shops which employ tens of thousands of poor, undocumented laborers. They refer to the working conditions in the shops as “modern day slavery”, and write about a new movement which is trying to change that.

The movement began as a simple Sunday gathering of friends and families that work in the industry, and has now evolved into a well organized group, intent on fighting inhumane working conditions. The group, called The Alameda Assembly, are fighting the system by setting up their own clothing cooperative. In their co-op, workers get fair and equal wages, work a maximum of 8 hours per day, and are given food for themselves and their children.
