If you’re planning on going to a wedding in Argentina, lose the blender, the dish set, and those pricey tango show tickets you bought. According to Danielkarlin of the blog Expat Argentina, cash is the preferred gift. Whether it’s a new phenomenon, or a cultural statement, you will most likely be asked to give money rather than gifts to Argentine newlyweds. Weddings here are a big deal, and often very large-scale events. And much like weddings in the states, it’s customary to bring gifts. Danielkarlin argues that such gift-giving seems out of place, and even inappropriate to a foreigner here. Not so, say the Argentines. In terms of practicality, nothing comes in handy more to a newlywed couple than money. It may feel tacky, or unoriginal, but in a country where inflation is a weekly gamble and unemployment is high, cash is king.
