Flights Cancelled, Delayed, as Smokescreen Continues to Cover City

As fires continue to burn outside of the city, smoke continues to paralyze travel coming in and out of the Argentine capital. Bus routes have been closed, and flights landing at Ezeiza International Airport have been put on hold temporarily. This is directly effecting Buenos Aires’ tourist industry, which accounts for a large portion of the local economy. With the city choked off from travel, many tourists are unable to enter the capital, and others are forced to stay inside their hotels, unable to tour the city with major attractions and monuments closed.

This has enraged local officials, who see these events as both preventable and criminal. President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner says, “These fires are the result of two aspects of human nature: irresponsibility and irrationality,” and urges members of parliament to prosecute the offenders.
