Buenos Aires blog Expat Argentina has updated a post from 2005 called “Blacks in Buenos Aires”, about what it’s like to be an African American, or a person of color, in Argentina. The original thread was meant to show the history of blacks in the country, and evolved into personal comments, stories, and feelings on the subject. While Buenos Aires is known for being a major cosmopolitan city, it often has the reputation of lacking ethnic diversity. According to the post, many blacks feel that they are being watched more carefully here, or that they stick out more than they would in the United States or Europe. However, the blog also mentions that this is more out of curiosity, and not malice, and that many blacks feel welcome and comfortable in the South American nation.

Being an African American women lving here for 5 months, I can say at times it becomes bothersome with the staring. I have only experienced twice some forms of racism but overall people are very friendly. Now if I can only get the men to stop thinking of us as exotic sexually creatures. Good grief!
