This past Saturday, 17-year-old Agustina Quinteros of La Pampa was crowned as this year’s Miss Argentina. The pageant was held at Rio Hondo in Santiago del Estero, where she beat out 24 contestants from around the country to win a spot at the 2008 Miss World competition to be held in Kiev, Ukraine next October. Though the achievement holds no real power, winners often serve as unofficial cultural ambassadors for their nation. The contest is run locally by the Belleza Argentina organization, which took over the event in 2004. It’s important for Argentina to be recognized internationally for something other than soccer or tango, however, competitions like these have been criticized for being vain and outdated by some.
