A federal court in Argentina has decriminalized the recreational use of Marijuana, in a political move that has been in the works for months. The ruling must still be presented in front of the Argentinean Supreme Court before it’s official, but the move sets precedent in regards to the government’s view on the societal and personal dangers of the drug. The Minister of Justice and Security for Argentina was recently quoted as saying that the war on recreational drug consumers is an “absolute failure.” A recent study done by a Buenos Aires public interest research group shows that one in ten Argentines has tried drugs in their lifetime. Though technically not legal, if the bill passes through the Supreme Court, minor possession penalties will all but be eliminated.
