Argentina Signs on for High-Speed Rail Contract, Would be First in South America
May 1, 2008 1 Comment PrintArgentine president Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner has just signed a $1.71 Billion USD contract with French firm Alstom to build three high-speed train lines throughout the country. The largest of these lines will connect Buenos Aires to Cordoba, the nations 2nd largest city, via Rosario. There are also plans to build lines from the capital to Mar del Plata, and Mendoza as well. This will cut travel time between these cities immensely, and ease travel for both tourists and inter-provincial businesses. Currently, due to varied terrain and highway restraints, inter-city travel is often long and unreliable. The current plan has no set completion date, but hopes are that the project will be finished within 4 or 5 years.
