Tango is the most famous Argentine dance. Its traditional structure, style, and music draws thousands of locals and tourists to milongas, or tango clubs, to study, practice, and perform the classic dance every day. Traditionally, the dance is between a man and a woman, with the man leading in steps. But now, traditional gender roles are being challenged at a new gay tango milonga called La Marshall. Though there is no restriction on who you can dance with at La Marshall, most couples are either man-man, or woman-woman. There are still a few mixed gender partners, but they account for a slim minority of the dance floor. Gay-themed activities in Buenos Aires are not a new thing, however, and the city is quickly becoming one of the world’s top gay tourist destinations. Reports say that an estimated 20% of annual visitors to BA are gay.
