In a recent post on his blog Expat Argentina, blogger Daniel Karlin writes about how locals reacted to a black friend of his visiting Buenos Aires. Karlin says that stares are not only common, but omnipresent even in the most touristy parts of the city, like calle Florida. His friend, Paul, though a bit put off by the constant stares, says that they come more from curiosity, rather than racism. He says that in general, there isn’t a racist vibe to the city as some would expect. Argentina has a rich history of African immigration in its past, however, today there are much fewer people of African descent living and working here. Although racism certainly exists in Buenos Aires, as it does everywhere, it’s not a major social problem. Black travelers, and people of color should be aware that while they may stick out amongst the locals, they won’t typically experience prejudice or malice from them.
