A volcanic eruption in Chile has paralyzed travel in parts of the Andean nation and spread ash into neighboring Chubut province in western Argentina. The Chaiten volcano, located some 1,300 kilometers south of the Chilean capital, Santiago, erupted on Friday, forcing the evacuation of 1,500 people. The volcano has stifled travel in Chubut, which is part of the greater Patagonia region, and a popular destination for outdoor-oriented tourism in Argentina. While no casualties have been reported, both the Chilean and Argentine governments have been delivering protective masks and emergency supplies to the region to prevent any potential health damage. The region also suffered a moderated-sized earthquake on Friday, in connection to the eruption.
