This week’s eruption of the Chaiten Volcano has caused thousands of residents to evacuate the region, including many parts of Patagonia. Reports are now saying that the gas/ash cloud is around 20 miles long and is quickly moving through Argentina, all the way to the Atlantic Ocean. Some estimate that Atlantic winds could carry the ash clouds all the way to Buenos Aires as early as Wednesday. Chaiten hadn’t previously errupted for around 9,000 years. The ash cloud is comprised of volcanic ash, smoke, and gases that can be harmful to people or animals if overexposed. Over 70,000 people in both Chile and Argentina have been evacuated so far.
