On Saturday, May 17th, Shakira and other Latin American and Spanish pop stars performed in Buenos Aires at a “Concert for the Children” to raise awareness about poor children in Latin America. The concert, held at the Costanera Sur, was attended by 150,000 people and watched by a total of 15 million people world-wide. A simultaneous partner concert was held in the Zocalo in Mexico City. Both concerts were to raise money for the ALAS (Latin America in Solidarity Action when translated into English). This concert is just one way in which Shakira has expressed her concern about the situation of many Latin America children. According to the Celebrity Café, she recently visited Gordon Brown to discuss third world education and also went to Capital Hill in the United States to push for more funding for Latin American schools. Because of this concert and her other efforts, Carlos Slim, Mexico’s richest man, and Howard Buffett pledged nearly $200 million between them to support the ALAS Foundation.
