The Grito Argentino reported yesterday that the Madres de la Plaza de Mayo have been announced as official candidates for the 2008 Nobel Peace prize in recognition of their work investigating and protesting the disappearance of so many Argentines during the last military junta. The Madres de la Plaza de Mayo was formed by mothers and grandmothers searching for missing children and family members. Since 1977, their goal has been to find, identify, and return children taken from their families. Today, they have succeeded in identifying and helping 89 “disappeared children.” They also motivated the creation of the Bank of Genetic Information in Argentina, so that atrocities like those in the Dirty War can be less easily committed. The winner of the Peace Prize will be announced in October and the prize of around one million Euros will be given on December 10th.
