Starting and ending in Buenos Aires, the Dakar off-roads car race, traditionally held in the African Sahara, is heading to Argentina and Chile for their 2009 competition. A race dedicated to the spirit of adventure, it is not surprising that the diverse terrain of Argentina and Chile has been selected for the event. The route, recently announced at a press conference with Carlos Enrique Meyer, Argentina’s State Secretary for Tourism, and Jaime Pizarro Herrera, State Secretary for Sports of Chile, is over 9,000 km long. It dips south from Buenos Aires as far as Chubut, heads north again as competitors drive through wine country, across the Andes to Valparaiso, and back again through northern Argentina and Cordoba. Registration for the event is open now.
