Buenos Aires to Begin Recycling Program

Daniel Scioli, governor of the Buenos Aires province, is launching a new waste recycling program. According to InfoBA, the plan, called “Generación 3R,” is meant to change not only the recycling opportunities available for city-dwellers, but also their attitudes towards recycling and trash in general. The three “Rs”: recycle, reduce, reuse, which many Americans learn in school, will now be implemented more in Argentine society. Scioli hopes to create solid waste treatment plants, which include recycling facilities, and also to prevent illegal land fills by improving solid waste collection. It will be a relief for some to have a place, finally, to put that Coke can other than the garbage. However, there are concerns about how “cartoneros” will be incorporated into—and not displaced by—this plan.
