Argentines celebrate not just the day they declared independence—the 25th of May, 1810—they also celebrate the entire week leading up to it. This year, the important week falls in the middle of a complicated farming strike and economic inflation, giving Argentine’s a chance to look beyond these immediate concerns and think about their place in history and their national pride. The National Library (Biblioteca National) is encouraging such reflection with a series of lectures and debates this week on Argentine history. Sadly for the working Argentine, the 25th falls on a Sunday this year, denying every one to enjoy the federal holiday as a day off from work.
