The Tokyo Cervantes Institute is opening an exhibition of over 100 photographs, drawings, comic stripes, and short animated films, all done by the famous comic artist Quino. According to the magazine Ñ, Quino, whose real name is JoaquÃn Salvador Lavado, is best known for his creation of the little girl named Mafalda—her round face can still be seen in nearly every kiosko in the city of Buenos Aires. Quino’s work has been compared to that of famous American comic strips like Peanuts and Calvin and Hobbes and he has won many international prizes. The exposition in Japan, the nation which created manga, further demonstrates the international appeal of Quino’s work. Although he cannot attend the exhibit, which ends in mid June, Quino says that he feels “honored.â€
