This weekend in Germany, “Las Leonas,” the Argentine women’s field hockey team, defeated host nation Germany 6 to 2 to win the gold medal at Samsung’s Champions Trophy. The most valuable player of the tournament was Argentina’s Luciana Aymar, who was also named the WorldHockey Player of the Year for 2007. The only other time Argentina has won gold at this international tournament was in 2001, when they defeated the Netherlands. They hope that the momentum they gained in this tournament will help them achieve an ever bigger gold in the Beijing Olympic Games. They will certainly be one of the teams to beat.
