After being closed for some time because of ash in air from the Chaiten Volcano, the international airport in Bariloche is once again open. Chaiten erupted for the first time since 7,400 BC on May 2nd, 2008, forcing the evacuation of several towns and causing a complete stoppage in airplane traffic over the affected area. On May 26th, in a meeting between members of the Air Force, Aeropuertos Argentina 2000, Omar Contreras, representatives of the private sector, and the mayor of Bariloche, Marcelo Cascón, various groups asked the Air Force to lift restrictions on flights, believing that the danger from the volcanic ash was past. Permission was granted, allowing private airline companies to resume services in Bariloche just in time for the beginning of ski season.
