Throughout the week and into the coming weekend, the Ministry of Health is promoting a series of events at public hospitals to motivate porteños to celebrate International Day without Tobacco, this coming Saturday, May 31st. The program seeks to educate both health care professionals and the general public about the dangers of smoking by hosting a series of seminars with topics such as “Pregnancy and Smoking.” Recently, in 2006, Buenos Aires banned smoking in public spaces, including restaurants and cafes, which was seen as a big change in Argentine culture. This current initiative by the government seems to reflect its continuing commitment to protecting Argentine lungs already impacted by the smog of the big city.
