For the first time ever, an Orthodox Jew, Guillermo Borger, will be the head of Argentina’s largest Jewish organization, the AMIA, or Argentine Israeli Mutual Association. With 22,000 members, the organization represents a wide range of believers and there are some fears that Borger will be too “fundamentalist.” This fear was deepened when Borger reportedly told the Clarín that being a Jew who didn’t practice his religion was a “paradox.”  His comment sparked protest by students and others who don’t want discrimination within the Jewish community.  It is impossible to predict what Borger will do doing his three year tenure, but certainly the 250,000 person Jewish community in Argentina will be watching and hoping that he does not become a divisive force in the AMIA.
