Argentina Barely Escapes World Cup Qualifying Defeat

This Sunday, the Argentine soccer team barely avoided embarrassing itself in front of a 42,000-strong crowd home town crowd at River Plate Stadium. According to the Canadian Press, Argentina played Ecuador who, up until the 89th minute of the game led 1-0. Then, Rodrigo Palacio scored the all-important goal to keep Argentina in strong contention for a World Cup spot. After this weekend, Brazil leads the qualifier tournament with 13 points, Argentina is second with 10, and Ecuador is eighth with four. Argentina will play Brazil this Wednesday, an important match that is sure to have Argentine cafes packed with excited, passionate fans.

Brazil is not leading, but Paraguay is with 13 points. Brazil is in the 5th position with 8 points, Argentina in the second with 10, Colombia with 9, and Uruguay with 8.
