The film Café de los maestros, or Café of the Greats, opened yesterday in Argentina and celebrates the men who have helped make tango what it is today. The Clarín reviewer describes the film as “all the glories of tango together” and the government has named it of “national interest.” What is the film about? It is both a record of the 2006 concert given by the Colón Theater Orchestra and a series of interviews with musicians who participated. The film tries to place the musicians and their music within the complex history of tango, which is a difficult task. The dance and music of tango are so central to the porteño identity that they seem at times to defy time or logic.
