There has been drama recently in the world of Argentine soccer, as it remains to be seen whether star Argentine soccer player Lionel Messi will play for Argentina in the Olympics or stay with his team in Barcelona. Diego Maradona, a soccer legend in Argentina, recently criticized Messi, saying that is was time for Messi to “be a man” and “take a stand.” According to Sports YA, some spectators were surprised that Maradona spoke so strongly against Messi instead of against Barcelona, which has been pressuring Messi to stay with them. No doubt Maradona’s criticisms are hard words to hear for Messi to hear, but they do reflect the urgent need for Messi to decide as the Olympics draw near.

[...] Diego Maradona made a surprising announcement last Friday when he announced that he would be willing and honored to coach the Argentine national soccer team. According to Reuters UK, Maradona’s statement followed the surprise announcement of Alfio Basile, the head coach, saying that he was leaving the team. The announcement was prompted by the erratic and somewhat poor performance of Argentine in the World Cup Qualifying games that has left that unsure they will even make it to the World Cup. Despite the fact that Maradona is Argentina’s most beloved soccer player of all time, he is not a favorite to win the coaching position. Other, more experienced coaches, including Miguel Angel Russo, Sergio Batista, Diego Simeone and Carlos Bianchi, are all considered more likely to get the job.
