On Saturday, Perez Celis died of leukemia in Otamendi sanitarium in Buenos Aires, the city in which he was born in 1939. Celis was one of Argentina’s most well known and respected contemporary artists; he did murals, paintings, and sculptures. One of his most recent projects was illustrating a Spanish translation of Walt Whitman’s great book of poems, Leave of Grass. Celis made his name known around the world, living in Lima, Caracas, Montevideo, Paris and New York. According to the Associated Press, his wake will be held at the club of his beloved Boca Juniors. Two of his murals decorate Boca’s stadium, where they can be seen by thousands of Argentines at every game of his favorite team.
