Historic Pasaje Zelaya in Abasto to Get Make-Over

2 Comments Print

The pasaje Zelaya in the barrio of Abasto will be receiving a make-over by the government of Buenos Aires as a part of their program “Prioridad Peatón.” This project gives priority to pedestrians and seeks to revitalize barrios by preserving their historic value for Argentines and tourists alike. Pasaje Zelaya is in the barrio of Abasto, one of Buenos Aires’s most historic barrios, and is graced with brightly colored buildings and historic balconies. It has its own tango district and is the area where the famous tango singer Carlos Gardel once lived. According to the government website, the government plans to invest 2,757,828 pesos over the course of three months to renovate the passage way. They announced their plan yesterday in the Teatro El Cubo, which resides on that very street, and said that it is all part of a greater goal to diversify the tourism options in the city.

I have been a fan of Carlos Gardel, since I first heard a recording of him in 1960 in New York City, FORTY-NINE YEARS AGO. Then eleven years later, in 1971, while visiting a cousin in Buenos Aires, I came across two of his records and bought them and took them home to Dallas Texas and have loved his singing ever since. I have collected all of his recordings on CD’s and play them all the time. He was the gratest of all Tango singers, and there are other wonderful singers, such as Alberto Castillo, Julio Sosa, etc. I have been to his beautiful tomb in Chacarito Cemetary, and I honor him and his legacy. THANK YOU SR. CARLOS GARDEL.

I mean every word of what I have written. Sr. Carlos Gardel was and still is the very best.
