Yesterday afternoon, two high officials in the Argentine military dictatorship, Antonio Bussi and Luciano Benjamin Menendez, were sentenced to life in prison. According to La Nacion, the trial was held in San Miguel in Tucuman province, which is in the north of the country. Argentina’s military dictatorship was in power from 1976-83, during which time human rights activists believe some 30,000 people disappeared. Bussi and Menendez were convicted of crimes against humanity and while Bussi continues to deny them, Menendez has admitted his part in the violent dictatorship. While this is a victory for many who are still seeking justice for the lost people of that dark time, it is bitter-sweet. Bussi and Menendez are 83 and 82 respectively; though they will now die under arrest, their lives are nearly over anyway.
