“The Argentine†is a new movie by Steven Soderbergh about Ernesto “Che†Guevara’s life. According to AFP, the film is actually the first half of a much longer movie made by Soderbergh about Guevara which was shown in its entirety earlier in the year at the Cannes Film Festival. At the festival, Benicio del Toro won the best actor prize for his portrayal of Guevara. Now, the first half of the film has been released in Spain to mixed reviews; it is not known when the second will be released. Some critics argue that del Toro’s depiction of Guevara is flat, while others found the film didactic. According to Soderbergh, his goal was to show Guevara as he was and not glorify him. Considering how much mythology surrounds this famous Latin American revolutionary, that task would not be an easy one.
