President of Wines of Argentina Susana Balbo believes that with organization and the best of modern technology, Argentina could soon be exporting ten percent of the world’s wines. According to La Nacion, at the recent Vinos y Bodegas fair at La Rural, Balbo presented a comprehensive plan to raise wine exports from their current level, three percent of the total world market, and take advantage of the fact that, over the past 20 years, the world wine market has grown 280 percent. Argentina has certain advantages over other countries, including the rich soils of Mendoza and Salta and the diverse number of bodegas looking to export. Unlike Chile and Australia, who have five to seven major bodegas a piece, Argentina has 95 major bodegas. Much work will have to be done on infrastructure and inflation needs to be kept in check, but Argentine wine growers are hopeful when it comes to their future as a wine world power.
