Over 500,000 pilgrims came to Salta yesterday to honor and celebrate the Virgin del Milagro (Virgin of the Miracle), who is a patron saint of the city. The festival is called the “Festival del Milagro” and celebrates the aid given to the people of Salta when an earthquake shook the city in 1692. People walked through the town, carrying pictures of the Virgin, and were saved from the aftershocks that they feared. According to La Voz, pilgrims came from all over Argentina, including some from Nazareno and Santa Victoria who walked 500 kilometers in 13 days to attend the event, with a 20 person band in tow. The largest number of pilgrims, over 1,500, came from Cachi and Payogasta, located in the Calchaquíes valleys.
