The cities of Buenos Aires and Montevideo are petitioning UNESCO to declare tango to be an irreplaceable “intangible cultural heritage of humanity.†According to Diario Rio Negro, the cities argue that the dance is an expression of the common people from which it originated and also represents the history of the communities in which it developed. While Argentina and Uruguay often seem to fight about tango—both claim that Carlos Gardel is their native son—they seemed agreed on this petition. The Buenos Aires cultural minister, Hernán Lombardi, went as far as saying that tango was a dance that united the two cities, forming part of their shared culture and identity. UNESCO held a conference in 2003 to discuss such “intangible†cultural heritages; it will be some time before it is decided whether or not tango falls into this category.
