It is often hard for Argentine writers to get their works translated and known abroad, so the appearance of thirty Argentine writers in a catalogue at the 2008 Frankfurt Book Festival is an encouraging sign. According to the Clarín, some European countries have, as part of their cultural programs, subsidies to translate their authors’ works; Argentina has very little of this. However, recently Argentine books have been translated into German—enough to have captured the European community’s attention. At this year’s fair, a catalogue of 30 Argentine books that merit translation but haven’t yet received the service is being presented with the hope that, by the 2010 fair, these works will be translated and included in the project. The Fundación TyPA, which helps to fund Argentine writers and translations, chose the works that were included in the catalogue.
