Until November 27, the Central Cultural Borges will host a gallery of some of the strongest photojournalism in the world. The photographs were selected by Word Press Photo, an independent, non-for-profit organization based in the Netherlands. 80,536 photographs were whittled down to 185 for the traveling exposition’s 10 categories. Portfolios, stories and single images were judged by a panel of experts. According to World Press Photo, they look for an image that “represents an issue, situation or event of great journalistic importance, and does so in a way that demonstrates an outstanding level of visual perception and creativity.” Tim Hetherington’s photo of a soldier in Afghanistan won Photo of the Year.
