Environmental Secretary Replaced

Outgoing Secretary Romina Picolotti, a lawyer and environmental activist, will be replaced by Homero Bibiloni.  Picolotti had promoted a glacier protection law that passed through congress only to be vetoed by President Cristina Fernandez.  This would have been an unfavorable bill for gold miner Barrick Gold Corp, who has plans to build a $2.4 billion mine in the Andes.  The relationship between the replacement and the mine are just speculation.  Officially, she was asked to step down for alleged abuse of funds and the failure to advance with plans to clean up the capital’s waterways.
