The Wildlife Conservation Society has just prevailed in its efforts to protect marine life off the coast of Argentina. The park became official in early December and protects half a million penguins and other rare species, including seabirds and South American fur seals. It is the first park of its kind in Argentina and will not only protect the species onshore, but also the areas of the ocean where the colonies feed. The Wildlife Conservation Society worked in conjunction with the National Park Service of Argentina and many other conservation groups. The southern part of the Chubut province was considered at risk because of escalating activity by commercial fishing and oil companies.
