Queer Tango

MSNBC reports on the growing trend of same-sex tango.  Given that Buenos Aires is one of the most gay-friendly cities in South America, it is no surprise that the movement is steadily gaining strength.  This past year marked the 3rd annual “Queer Tango Festival.”  Tango teacher and festival organizer Mariana Falcon even coordinates a special milonga on Tuesday nights for the dancers.  At Club Buenos Aires in San Telmo, there is the usual pre-dance lesson, but rather than the women waiting for an inviting glance from a man, the couples are free to ask whomever they choose.

The oldest and most well-known gay milonga is La Marshal on Wednesday nights, Maipu 444, in el Centro.

It’s a great atmosphere, fun, with good music. And it’s for everyone.

I just wanted to point out that Tango was originally conceived as a 2 men dance.
