El 23 Gran Bar

Searching for a good meal in Mendoza, I passed a palm tree, spied a gorgeous fountain and found myself at a restaurant with quite the garden. I expected it to be totally out of my budget, but couldn’t resist a peek at the menu. That was a great idea.el-23-gran-bar-1

Besides its lovely garden, El 23 Gran Bar has a truly amazing menu. Fresh ingredients and surprising dishes are listed at a very good price. I tried some tapas as a starter: traditional, Spanish eggs over fried potatoes, tumaca bread with cured ham, a cheese plate and roasted garlic paste with homemade bread. I should have stopped there, but I had already ordered an entree. Next came the sea-salted spinach malfitas with sun dried cherry tomatoes and tuna crepes. Delicious!

el-23-gran-bar-3The restaurant is part of Almacen del Sur, a delicatessen products line that specializes in gourmet food. Furthermore, the vinoteca The Winery is located in the same building so there is no shortage of good wines. El 23 Gran Bar is also a nice place for lunch as they have a variety of salads, sandwiches and cantuccinis (homemade almond biscotti). They play funky jazz music all day, which makes the modern, relaxing experience complete.

The tapas are around 13 pesos a piece (big portions!) and the main courses will cost you between 25 and 42 pesos. And if you want a cocktail after dinner, you’re already in the right spot!
