Olsen in Palermo – Scandinavian Cuisine and Fabulous Brunch in Buenos Aires

Olsen in Palermo, Buenos AiresHidden behind an 8-ft high wooden fence on the quiet street of Nicaragua in Palermo Hollywood, sits Olsen, a wonderful restaurant serving Scandinavian cuisine in a tranquil environment. Whether you are seated at one of the reclining chairs in Olsen’s mini-garden out front, or at a round table for eight in the open-air dining room, your experience will no doubt be relaxing and enjoyable. Oh yeah, and the food is great too!

My Olsen experience was on a Sunday afternoon for Easter brunch (which was offered all day). The menu, like at many restaurants in Buenos Aires, offers a varied menu where none of the combinations cost more than $39 pesos, and all which are quite satisfying.

Prior to my trip to Olsen, I really did not have a clue what Scandinavian cuisine entailed. However, now I know that I am definitely a fan. All of the brunch offerings included some sort of vegetable salad, egg-based main course (such as omelets or scrambled eggs), a hash-brown type side dish, and either a selection of fish or meat to compliment everything else. I went with the special of the day which included scrambled eggs, a cucumber and avocado salad, a potato pancake topped with fresh smoked salmon and caviar, and a mini bottle of champagne, all for $27 pesos!

Like many ethnic restaurants in Palermo Hollywood, Olsen is popular and usually busy. My party lucked out by arriving seconds after another party’s reservation was cancelled, so we were seated immediately. If we had not been so lucky, the estimated waiting time would have been close to an hour and a half, so I recommend making a reservation.

Overall, I could not have been more pleased with my experience at Olsen. The staff was friendly, the ambiance was perfectly chic yet not in-your-face, and I can now add Scandinavian food to the list of cusines that I love. I already have reservations for Sunday, and I recommend that you check it out as well!

[…] Olsen: Scandinavian inspired bar with an extensive cocktail list and caviar-laden small plates. Brunch is supposedly a hit. An outdoor garden extends over a little pond and a giant wood stove hangs from the barn-like ceiling which I´d estimate to be 30 feet high. Soundtrack included Bjork, Blonde Redhead, an electronic remind of Oh Mandy, and at least three tracks by Coldplay, a national obsession. […]

[…] “We love a party here,” Agustin reflected as we chewed down a late Sunday breakfast. No truer words have been spoken. […]
