The area around the pedestrian streets Peatonal C. Gelsi and Peatonal Isauro Martinez, just a block away from the Plaza Independencia, is the outdoor mall of downtown Tucumán.

Join the locals as you stroll through the streets, looking at the various stores, listening to the occasional street musician, and watching people as they eat at cafe terraces. Make sure you walk past the Correo Argentino building on 25 de Mayo – there are few post offices as impressive at that one, and you can just walk in and admire it from the inside, while you’re buying a couple of stamps.

For souvenirs, head towards the Casa Independencia – the pedestrian area of Congreso de Tucumán street has several stores selling handicrafts and traditional foods. There is also an outdoor flea market, at the corner of 24 de Setiembre and Av. Avellaneda, just across the train tracks.
