The shopping Mecca for bargain hunters in South America is, of course, the bootleggers and contraband paradise of Ciudad del Este, an apparently tax-free haven where you can buy a fake –or sometimes authentic- just about anything you could possibly imagine. It’s a wide-boy day out for buying perfume, discount watches, alcohol, gold jewelry and of course, the latest electronic gadgets.

Otherwise, Misiones is famous for its mate tea, guaraní musical instruments and recordings of indigenous folk music, Indian woven textiles and wood carvings. The many different varieties of trees produce woods of different textures and colors, which are combined in carvings of the rainforest creatures, such as toucans and lizards.
